A man drove his car into pedestrians in the northern Italian city of Modena on Tuesday, injuring eight people, four of them seriously, officials say.
The incident occurred around 16:30 local time. Witnesses described the car accelerating suddenly, reaching speeds of at least 100 km/h, and deliberately mounting the curb. The suspect, identified as Salim El Koudri, an Italian national of Maghreb origins, then got out of the car and brandished a knife before being overpowered by bystanders.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the event “extremely serious.” Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said it would be “even more serious” if the attack was premeditated.
