KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's police force has initiated a disciplinary investigation into one of its personnel after a viral video showing Malaysian tourists covering their noses and shouting "smelly" in China sparked widespread condemnation.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said Tuesday the officer remains on duty during the probe. He urged calm and said the investigation will be thorough, with potential legal action if any law is broken.
Khalid reminded all officers to maintain proper conduct at all times, even when off-duty or abroad, as they remain subject to police regulations.
The video, posted June 15 by TikTok user @ekyn.wong (Nur Asyiqin Mohd Dalil), was perceived as mocking local residents. It drew anger from Chinese citizens and international media attention.
