A gunman fatally shot a Canadian tourist and wounded more than a dozen others atop a historic pyramid in Mexico on Monday. Authorities identified the assailant as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso. He died by suicide after turning the gun on himself.
Seven victims were struck by gunfire, while others sustained injuries during the panic and scramble to descend the pyramids. The victims, tourists from various countries including the United States, Colombia, Russia, Brazil, and Canada, ranged in age from 6 to 61.
The Teotihuacan complex, a popular archaeological landmark near Mexico City, draws millions of visitors annually. The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. on the Pyramid of the Moon. Security measures at the site have reportedly been inconsistent. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated the incident would be investigated. The archaeological site will remain closed until further notice.
