The Trump administration is proposing tariffs of 10% or higher on imports from dozens of major trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, and the UK, following a probe into goods allegedly produced with forced labor.
A steeper 12.5% tariff would target China, Japan, India, South Korea, Brazil, Switzerland, and others.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the move aims to level the playing field for American workers, accusing trading partners of failing to enforce forced labor import bans. The tariffs are not immediate and will undergo public comment.
The investigation, under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, follows a Supreme Court ruling in February that curbed Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for sweeping tariff actions.
