An 18-year-old man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a fatal crash that occurred in Whitchurch-Stouffville. Jaiwin Kirubananthan entered the plea Monday in a Newmarket courtroom, admitting guilt to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop at an accident causing death, and three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. The plea was unexpected, coming on the first day of his trial for the August 3, 2025, collision that claimed the life of 35-year-old Andrew Cristillo.

Kirubananthan's case gained public attention due to an earlier alleged incident involving Premier Doug Ford's vehicle. This connection preceded the Ford government's introduction of justice legislation proposing a lifetime driving ban for those convicted of dangerous driving causing death. The bill also includes provisions for license suspension and vehicle impoundment.

According to agreed facts, Kirubananthan was driving his father's SUV at high speeds on Highway 48 before entering the northbound lane while traveling south. The resulting collision with a northbound vehicle driven by Andrew Cristillo occurred at approximately 130 km/h. Cristillo was pronounced dead at the scene. Three children in the Nissan SUV were taken to hospital with injuries.

Court proceedings are scheduled to resume on June 22 to set a date for sentencing.
