Opposition MLA Margaret Johnson is demanding immediate action and a review of security measures at New Brunswick nursing homes after 15 alleged sexual assaults were reported at Loch Lomond Villa in Saint John.
The PC critic for social development and seniors stated that if such incidents are occurring in one facility, they are likely happening in others across the province. She called for province-wide policies to ensure seniors in care are not left vulnerable.
Saint John Police confirmed a 69-year-old man, a family member of a resident, has been charged with sexually assaulting 15 individuals at the facility. The victims range in age from their 70s to 90s. Police stated the investigation is complete with no additional victims or suspects believed to be involved.
Johnson urged for swift implementation of adequate security checks for staff and visitors, improved monitoring, and clearer access policies, emphasizing that legislative action should not wait.
Loch Lomond Villa stated the accused has been banned from the property and that the facility already has security cameras, key-card access, and controlled doors in place, operating under existing nursing home laws and having recently added on-site security.
Minister of Seniors Lyne Chantal Boudreau confirmed the province is reviewing its policies and procedures, as well as those of individual nursing homes, in light of the allegations. She stated ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and the facility.
The accused has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court.
