North Korea conducted tests of strategic cruise and anti-ship missiles from its destroyer Choe Hyon on Sunday, state media KCNA reported Tuesday. Leader Kim Jong Un observed the drills, which tested the warship's weapons systems and missile-launch procedures.
KCNA stated that two cruise missiles flew for over two hours and three anti-ship missiles were launched, striking targets with "ultra-precision accuracy." Kim was also briefed on plans for two additional destroyers currently under construction, part of the Choe Hyon class.
Kim underscored that enhancing the country's nuclear war deterrent remains a paramount objective. He called for improvements in strategic and tactical strike capabilities and rapid-response readiness.
This development suggests North Korea is accelerating the formation of a destroyer flotilla, with faster production following successful initial testing. Analysts note that Pyongyang appears to be expediting weapons development amidst global strategic distractions.
