Prosecutors have accused Diego Maradona’s medical team of gross negligence leading to his death in November 2020. The seven-strong team allegedly treated the football legend, who died at age 60, with "omissions" and "amateur" care during his home convalescence.

Maradona’s daughters and former partner were present in court as prosecutors detailed alleged failings, stating the star endured hours of agony before his death from heart failure and pulmonary edema. Lawyers for the family highlighted that essential medical checks, like using a stethoscope, were not performed in the critical weeks before his passing.

The defendants, including doctors and nurses, face potential prison terms of eight to 25 years if convicted of homicide by recklessness. The defense argues Maradona, who struggled with addiction, died of natural causes. This new trial follows the annulment of a previous one due to a judicial scandal and is expected to hear from around 120 witnesses.
