Iranian authorities have granted bail to Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, allowing her transfer from prison to a Tehran hospital amid severe health concerns.
The 54-year-old human rights campaigner, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for opposing female oppression in Iran, suffered two suspected heart attacks earlier this year. Her family had warned she could die in prison.
According to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, she is now at Tehran Pars Hospital under the care of her own medical team. Her husband, based in Paris, described her condition as unstable.
Mohammadi has lost about 20 kilograms while incarcerated, has difficulty speaking, and is barely recognizable, according to her lawyer. She was serving a 13-year sentence on charges including propaganda activities against the state.
Her foundation insists bail is not enough, demanding permanent specialized care and unconditional freedom, stating no human rights activist should be imprisoned for peaceful work.
