One million European citizens have signed a petition calling for the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel, citing alleged war crimes in Gaza. The European Commission and Parliament will now review the petition.
The initiative states Israel is responsible for widespread civilian casualties, displacement, and the destruction of medical facilities in Gaza. It also alleges breaches of international law and a failure to prevent genocide, as referenced by the International Court of Justice.
Launched by the European Left Alliance and other organizations, the petition requires national authorities to verify signatures within three months before formal submission. The European Commission must then respond with proposed actions or justifications for inaction, while the European Parliament may hold hearings and debate a resolution.
The EU-Israel Association Agreement, established in 2000, governs political dialogue and economic ties, with the EU being Israel's largest trading partner. Despite a past proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a partial suspension due to concerns over Gaza, member states remain divided, with nations like Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic opposing trade restrictions.
