An Indian billionaire's son has offered a solution to Colombia's long-standing hippo problem, stemming from animals illegally imported by drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Anant Ambani, son of Asia's richest man Mukesh Ambani, has expressed willingness to care for the hippos at his Vantara zoo in Gujarat, India. This offer comes as Colombia grapples with the growing population, which has been declared an invasive species and poses a threat to native fauna and local communities.
Escobar's original pair of hippos, known as "cocaine hippos," have multiplied significantly since his death in 1993, thriving in the Magdalena River basin. Despite previous control efforts, including castration, the herd has continued to expand, prompting Colombia's decision to cull approximately 80 animals.
The Vantara zoo, a 3,500-acre facility, houses over 2,000 animals and is located near one of the world's largest oil refineries. The zoo has previously hosted lavish events, including pre-wedding celebrations for Anant Ambani.
