Switzerland has reached its first World Cup quarter-final since 1954 after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Colombia.

The match in Vancouver ended 0-0 after 120 minutes. In the shootout, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved a penalty from Cucho Hernandez, and Colombia's Davinson Sanchez hit the crossbar. Ruben Vargas then stroked home the decisive penalty to secure a 4-3 win.

"It is very difficult for me to realise what we achieved today," Vargas said after the match. "We made history."

The game's best chances came late. Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta forced a superb save from Kobel in the first half. In extra time, Colombia's Jhon Lucumi headed a corner against the crossbar.

Switzerland was missing breakout star Johan Manzambi, who was injured in training. The team had been eliminated in the round of 16 in the last four World Cups.

The Swiss will now face holders Argentina in the quarter-final in Kansas City. Argentina advanced with a 3-2 comeback win over Egypt.
