A Pennsylvania State Police corporal has pleaded guilty to a range of serious crimes, including the creation of over 3,000 AI-generated pornographic deepfakes. Stephen Kamnik, 39, admitted to misusing Commonwealth computer resources for personal sexual gratification.
Investigators discovered Kamnik used illicitly obtained photos from state databases, including driver's license images, to create the deepfakes. Some of the imagery was produced using state-owned devices at police barracks. The investigation began after unusual internet bandwidth usage and the repeated attachment of external hard drives to Kamnik's work computer raised suspicion.
Authorities confirmed Kamnik obtained material through various illicit means, including secretly filming and photographing individuals, even a district court judge during proceedings. His devices revealed the use of a secured database, JNET, to obtain hundreds of photographs of women, violating JNET usage policies that strictly prohibit personal use.
