Péter Magyar was sworn in as Hungary's new prime minister on Saturday, ending 16 years of Viktor Orbán's rule. His Tisza party won 141 seats in the 199-seat National Assembly, an outright majority. The outgoing Fidesz party holds 44 seats.
Magyar was confirmed with 140 votes in favor, 54 against, and one abstention. In his inaugural address, he declared, "I will not rule over Hungary, I will serve my homeland," and called for reconciliation and justice. He urged high office holders from the previous regime to resign by May 31.
Breaking tradition, former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not attend the session or deliver a speech. The new parliament speaker, Ágnes Forsthoffer, announced the reinstatement of the EU flag on the parliament building, absent for 12 years. A "system-changing people's festival" was held in Kossuth Square to celebrate the transition.
