A Nepali investigative panel has recommended that former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli be prosecuted for negligence in failing to prevent the deaths of at least 19 Gen Z protesters during anti-corruption demonstrations in September 2025. The protests, which led to Oli’s resignation, saw a total of 76 people killed and 2,522 wounded over two days.
The 970-page report, released on March 26, holds Oli, along with Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and former Police Chief Chandra Kuber Khapung, responsible for the violence. If prosecuted and found guilty, they could face up to 10 years in jail.
Legal experts note that formal criminal investigations are required before any charges can be filed. The decision on whether to proceed with the recommendations lies with incoming Prime Minister Balendra Shah and his Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Families of the victims have been calling for justice and accountability for those involved in the crackdown.
