Hundreds of Indonesian students marched in Jakarta on June 12, 2026, protesting President Prabowo Subianto’s fiscal management. Demonstrators labeled the rally "Heading to Bankrupt Indonesia," demanding an end to recent gasoline price hikes and the cancellation of the government’s flagship free nutritious meals program.

The administration had previously held fuel prices steady despite global oil spikes driven by the Iran war. However, mounting budgetary pressure from expansive spending plans forced a substantial price increase earlier this week. Protesters carried signs labeling the Cabinet a "Wall of Shame" and called for lower costs on staple foods.

Student leaders argued that wasteful spending on free meals and village cooperatives has drained subsidies, creating a fiscal crisis. The free meals initiative, targeting 83 million children and pregnant women, faces criticism for inefficiency, financial leakage, and governance failures after thousands reported food poisoning.

Tensions escalated as police and military personnel blocked access to the Bundaran HI landmark. Scuffles erupted when protesters attempted to breach metal barricades. Activists also voiced concern over the expanding military role in civilian affairs, fearing a return to the authoritarian era of former President Suharto.

Organizers stated their demands include halting what they deem wasteful expenditures to prevent economic, democratic, and moral bankruptcy. Jakarta police did not immediately comment on the blockade tactics employed during the demonstration.
