At least 24 people are dead after a bomb blast struck a train carrying military personnel in southwestern Pakistan.

The explosion happened Sunday near Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, as the train passed through Chaman Phatak. Officials say an explosive-laden car hit one of the carriages, causing a massive blast.

Images from the scene show destroyed train carriages and rubble.

The Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, has reportedly claimed responsibility. The group seeks an independent Balochistan.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned what he called a “heinous bomb explosion,” offering condolences to victims’ families.

Senator Sherry Rehman noted most of the dead were women and children traveling for the Islamic festival of Eid.
