Russia has declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine from May 8-9, coinciding with Moscow's annual World War II Victory Day commemorations. The Russian defense ministry warned of a "massive missile strike" on Kyiv if Ukraine violates the truce.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his own ceasefire, stating he had not received an official appeal from Moscow. "We believe that human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebration," Zelenskyy said in a statement. His ceasefire starts at midnight on May 5-6.
Russian President Vladimir Putin first proposed the short-term truce last week during a phone call with President Trump. In response, Zelenskyy urged Russian leaders to take real steps to end the war, noting the defense ministry believes it cannot hold a parade without Ukraine's goodwill.
