A former colonel in Syrian Air Force intelligence has appeared in a London court, facing charges of crimes against humanity. Salem Michel Al-Salem, 58, is accused of three counts of murder, one count of conduct ancillary to murder, and three counts of torture. These charges stem from alleged events in Damascus between 2011 and 2012, including protester deaths during a demonstration on April 22, 2011.

Al-Salem, who appeared via video link and reportedly suffers from motor neurone disease, was remanded on bail. His legal team's request to prevent his naming was rejected by the chief magistrate, who emphasized the importance of open justice. The investigation, described as complex and involving international inquiries, marks a significant development in prosecuting Syrian civil war-related offenses in the UK.
