The UN Security Council convened Wednesday afternoon for a briefing from the International Criminal Court on its work in Sudan's Darfur region.
The Court was first referred to the situation in Darfur in 2005. Its current focus is on atrocities committed during the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
This briefing occurs as the ICC faces significant political pressure. This week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a public campaign to dismantle the international tribunal, which prosecutes individuals for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression.
