The World Food Programme reports a critical humanitarian crisis in El Obeid, Sudan, where hunger is deepening for over 100,000 displaced people. WFP Country Director Abdallah Alwardat stated from Kosti that reduced food rations are being shared among families due to a complete lack of other income sources. The city is under siege, facing continuous drone strikes and a possible paramilitary offensive.
Sudan remains the world's largest displacement crisis, with over 14 million people uprooted by conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia. Nearly 20 million people are acutely food insecure. WFP is providing assistance to the most vulnerable but is stretched by funding shortages.
Despite logistical and financial challenges, WFP has managed to deliver and pre-position food for the coming months. Alwardat emphasized the agency's capacity to sustain the lifeline with necessary financial support.
