Spain is preparing for an intense heatwave beginning this Sunday, June 21. Meteorologists warn that a ridge of warm, dry air moving north from Africa will push temperatures between 40°C and 45°C across the Iberian Peninsula.

The extreme weather system originates in central and western Europe before concentrating over Spain and France. While coastal regions like Galicia may see highs near 38°C, inland river basins including the Ebro, Tagus, and Guadalquivir are forecast to exceed 40°C.

Monday and Tuesday represent the peak of this thermal event. Overnight lows across much of the country will remain above 25°C, preventing nocturnal relief. Northern Spain faces significant temperature anomalies, with readings running 10°C to 15°C above seasonal averages.

Meteorologist José Antonio Maldonado cautions that the most severe conditions arrive early next week rather than during the initial weekend onset. Forecasts indicate potential highs reaching 45°C alongside risks of severe storms. Although intensity diminishes after Tuesday, June 23, elevated temperatures will persist through the remainder of the week.
