Modena, Italy - Eight people were injured, four critically, after a car plowed into pedestrians in the city center on Saturday, according to local officials.

Mayor Massimo Mezzetti confirmed that a woman pinned against a shop window may require amputation of both legs. Two of the critically injured were transferred to Bologna’s Maggiore Hospital, while the other two remain in Modena.

The driver, a 31-year-old Italian citizen of Moroccan origin with no prior record, was detained and is being questioned. Investigators are probing whether he was under the influence of substances or acted deliberately.

Early reports from witnesses indicate the driver aimed for the sidewalk, struck a bicycle, and then hit a woman head-on, crushing her legs before crashing into a shop window. The mayor stated that he was seen with a weapon but did not manage to stab anyone.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is in contact with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and National Security Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano. In a post on X, Meloni expressed solidarity with the victims and praised citizens who bravely intervened to stop the perpetrator.
