A 35-year-old woman remains in critical condition following a violent white shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday morning. The incident occurred approximately 100 feet from shore while the victim swam with two friends.

Lifeguard Charlie Verco, observing from a paddleboard, witnessed the 11-foot shark emerge and submerge the victim. Verco initiated the rescue, pulling the incapacitated woman toward shore as bystanders assisted. Ian Ferguson, an off-duty hospital physician present at the scene, applied tourniquets to severe wounds on the victim's thigh and arm, which exposed bone.

The woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital for extensive surgical intervention. Local authorities have closed Coogee and adjacent beaches for 24 hours. This event marks the latest in a series of shark incidents across Australia in 2026, including three fatal attacks on spearfishers and a fatal bull shark mauling of a child in Sydney Harbor earlier this year.
