The Israeli government has confirmed the detention of Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, who were removed from a Gaza-bound flotilla in international waters and brought to Israel for questioning.
Israel accuses both men of ties to Hamas through the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, a group the U.S. designates as a Hamas front. Both detainees will receive consular visits from their respective embassies.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called the detention "illegal" and demanded Abu Keshek be released to Crete with the other 174 activists. Spain has summoned the Israeli ambassador in protest and joined 10 other countries, including Turkey and Brazil, in a joint declaration condemning the action as a "flagrant violation of international law."
The Global Sumud Flotilla alleges both activists were tortured by Israeli forces after being separated from the group. Organizers say 35 activists required medical treatment following the raid.
Abu Keshek's wife, Sally Issa, told Spanish television the family has received no information about his transfer and fears for his health, citing witness reports of systematic violence. The remaining flotilla activists have disembarked in Crete and are being repatriated.
