President Donald Trump says he is considering withdrawing U.S. troops from Spain and Italy because of their opposition to the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran, now in its third month.

The remarks follow a similar threat against Germany after Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized Washington's war strategy.

"Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

As of December 31, 2025, there were 36,436 U.S. troops in Germany, 12,662 in Italy, and 3,814 in Spain.

Trump has been critical of NATO allies for failing to support the operation against Iran or keep the Strait of Hormuz open. His dispute with Italy escalated after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the war last month.

Spain has been at odds with Washington over its stance on Gaza and refusal to meet NATO's 5% GDP defense spending target. The U.S. has previously threatened to suspend Spain from the alliance.

Brent crude closed Friday at around $114 a barrel, up sharply from pre-war prices of $70.
