TAIPEI: Taiwan reported a return of large-scale Chinese military flights around the island on March 15, ending more than two weeks of unusual inactivity that raised concerns in Taipei.

The Defense Ministry detected 26 Chinese aircraft, primarily in the Taiwan Strait, over the past 24 hours-the first significant movement since February 25. From February 27 through March 7, Taiwan recorded no Chinese flights, followed by only sporadic small-scale incursions.

Beijing has not explained the pause. However, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office condemned President Lai Ching-te’s recent call for increased defense spending, warning that reckless actions would lead to self-destruction.

Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo emphasized that while aircraft activity ceased, Chinese warships remain in proximity, underscoring continued strategic pressure.

Taiwan maintains its sovereignty stance, rejecting Beijing’s claims.
