A French court has sentenced Tariq Ramadan, a prominent Islamic scholar, to 18 years in prison for raping three women. The case dates back to 2017, when two of the victims came forward during the Me Too movement. Ramadan, 63, denied the charges and did not attend the trial, claiming he is receiving treatment in Switzerland for multiple sclerosis. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, but Switzerland does not have an extradition treaty with France. One of the victims, Henda Ayari, said she felt believed by the court after nine years of suffering. Ramadan has called for a new trial, stating he was unable to attend due to health issues. He is also banned from entering France.
