President Donald Trump convened a meeting in the White House Situation Room to make a "final determination" on an agreement extending the ceasefire with Iran. Trump outlined his terms: Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon, the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened for unrestricted shipping, and all mines in the waterway must be destroyed.

Trump said he is prepared to lift the US blockade of the strait and allow ships to "head home." He also insisted Iran permit the US to remove and destroy enriched uranium. No money will be exchanged, until further notice. Iran has not agreed to negotiate its nuclear program and dismissed portions of Trump's statement as a "mixture of truth and lies."

US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February triggered Iranian retaliation and the closure of the strait, which has driven global oil prices higher. Both sides have accused each other of ceasefire violations. Iran's IRGC claimed to have targeted a US air base in Kuwait; US Central Command called that an "egregious violation."
