Two people are dead and at least 22 others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig Monday afternoon.

Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the suspect was apprehended, but authorities do not yet know the motive. Fire chief Axel Schuh said two of the injured are in serious condition.

First responders include approximately 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics, supported by two helicopters. The incident occurred on Grimmaische Straße, a central pedestrian area, before the driver fled. Police later arrested the suspect, stating there is no further threat to the public.
