A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea near Ternate, Indonesia, on Thursday, April 2, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed.

The quake occurred at 6:48 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for areas within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter, including coastal regions of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Ternate, located approximately 120 kilometers from the epicenter, is home to more than 205,000 people in North Maluku province.
