An 18-year-old from Vaughan, Ontario, charged with two suspected hate-motivated assaults involving the Jewish community, has been released on $2,000 bail.
Ruslan Novruzov was freed from the Toronto Regional Bail Centre Monday with conditions to remain in his home except for medical emergencies. He must not contact the victims or possess any weapons, including imitation firearms.
Toronto police arrested Novruzov last Friday. They say two gel-blaster imitation firearms were seized along with a vehicle. The charges cover two incidents.
On April 30, three visibly Jewish people were shot at in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue West area. Police say the suspect fired an Orbeez-type gun from a vehicle.
On May 7, outside the Congregation Chasidei Bobov synagogue, three people were again shot at from a vehicle. One was hit and suffered minor injuries.
Mayor Olivia Chow called the attack “a disgusting antisemitic hate crime.” She added, “Toronto is a city where everyone must be free to practice their faith and live without fear.”
A publication ban covers evidence heard in bail court. Novruzov is due back in court next month.
