At least two people are dead and several others injured after a car plowed into a crowd on a busy shopping street in the German city of Leipzig.

Police say the driver was arrested after the vehicle careered from a main square down Grimmaische street, a major pedestrian zone in the city's old town. The driver stopped of his own accord, according to authorities.

Leipzig mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the death toll of two, saying the motivation remains unknown. At least two people were seriously injured, and about 20 others sustained lighter injuries, according to local fire chief Axel Schuh.

Germany has been shaken by a series of car-ramming attacks in recent years, including the 2024 Christmas market attack in Magdeburg and rammings in Berlin and Munich.
