The United Nations reports June 2026 was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022. The UN's human rights monitoring mission stated at least 293 civilians were killed and 1,990 injured.

The sharp increase is attributed to Russia's escalation of long-range missile strikes targeting urban centers, exploiting a reported shortage of Ukrainian air-defense missiles. Verified civilian deaths in the first half of 2026 are 37% higher than the same period last year.

The conflict, now in its fourth year, continues without active peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking more air-defense support from Western allies to protect major cities.

The UN has verified a total of 16,431 civilian deaths in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, though it believes the actual toll is significantly higher.
