The United States has deployed a new, low-cost suicide drone, the LUCAS, in Iran just eight months after its unveiling. This rapid deployment underscores the Pentagon's push to accelerate weapons programs.
The Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS) drone, manufactured by SpektreWorks, is modeled after Iran-made Shahed systems, which have been effectively used in conflicts. This accelerated fielding deviates from traditional acquisition timelines, incorporating lessons learned from drone warfare in Ukraine.

The LUCAS drone costs approximately $35,000 each, significantly less than more advanced, reusable systems. Its open architecture allows for various payloads and deployment methods, including ground or truck launch. The US government owns the design intellectual property, allowing for multiple manufacturers.
