Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated Kyiv is ready to assist in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced disruptions due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine has not yet received any formal requests for this assistance.

Kyiv's offer stems from its experience managing the Black Sea Grain Corridor, navigating Russian attempts to block vital shipments. Zelenskyy sees parallels between the Black Sea situation and the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that war and negotiations to reopen the strait can occur concurrently. He highlighted Ukraine's success in controlling its grain corridor, which involved employing interceptors, military escorts, and electronic warfare.

Ukraine's proposed solutions for securing the Strait of Hormuz involve clearing mines, neutralizing coastal threats from Iran, and real-time ship defense. The nation possesses significant expertise in intercepting Shahed-type drones, a key threat in the Strait. Kyiv's naval drones, including models like Magura V5, Sea Baby, and Mamay, have proven effective against Russian naval assets and can be adapted to defend commercial shipping. These naval drone capabilities are part of recent defense agreements Ukraine signed with Gulf countries.

For Ukraine, these defense deals with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE represent an opportunity to expand its arms exports globally, enhance its own air defense against Russian missiles, and secure financially beneficial contracts for its defense industry. The nation also aims to leverage the current geopolitical climate to strengthen its international standing, transitioning from a recipient of aid to a security provider.
