The United Nations rights chief, Volker Turk, is calling for an immediate de-escalation in the Middle East, urging warring parties to "give peace a chance."
Speaking in Geneva, Turk expressed grave concern over the rapidly spreading conflict, stating, "The world urgently needs to see steps to contain and extinguish this blaze." He lamented the increase in bombings, killings, and escalatory rhetoric, emphasizing that "cool heads must prevail" to prevent further terror and devastation for civilians.
His remarks coincide with fresh strikes in Iran and Lebanon, with Israel indicating a readiness to escalate the regional war. The conflict has already drawn in global powers and disrupted energy and transport sectors.
Turk highlighted Lebanon as a "key flashpoint," expressing deep worry over Hezbollah's attacks and Israel's counter-strikes, which have led to widespread displacement. He demanded an "immediate cessation of hostilities."
The UN rights chief also called on global leaders to reaffirm their commitment to international human rights and humanitarian law, warning against further ignition of "powder kegs."
