The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns Earth’s climate is more unbalanced than at any point in recorded history.

Between 2015 and 2025, the planet endured its hottest 11 years on record. In 2025 alone, global temperatures rose 1.43°C above pre-industrial levels, while ocean heat hit a new high.

WMO Deputy Executive Secretary Ko Barrett emphasized that melting glaciers and warming oceans are driving long-term sea-level rise, threatening billions who rely on marine resources.

Scientific officer John Kennedy reported record atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in 2024-the largest year-on-year increase ever recorded. These gases trap solar energy, creating a planetary energy imbalance.

Ninety percent of excess heat is absorbed by oceans, endangering coastal communities where 11% of the global population resides.
