A Quebec Court judge is expected to rule Friday in the case of former Hydro-Quebec researcher Yuesheng Wang, the first person charged with economic espionage under Canada's Security of Information Act.

Wang was arrested in 2022 and is accused of sharing proprietary research with Chinese entities without permission. The Crown also alleges he applied to Chinese universities under a government program to recruit foreign-trained scientists.

Wang, a Chinese national and a resident of Candiac, Quebec, has pleaded not guilty. During November testimony, he claimed his interest in returning to China was driven by unhappiness at work and visa concerns, not nefarious intent.

A verdict is expected Friday.
