FIFA is considering rescheduling two high-stakes World Cup knockout matches this Sunday as severe weather, including flooding, advances on Mexico City.

Mexico’s match against England at the Estadio Azteca may move from an evening slot to noon local time to avoid the worst conditions. Mexican media first reported the potential shift. Such a change could ripple across the tournament, likely delaying Brazil’s subsequent match against Norway in New York by one hour.

Moving the game to midday transforms the physical challenge. Teams would trade the evening cool for peak daytime sun and the physiological toll of the Azteca’s 2,200-meter altitude. Thinner air reduces oxygen availability, accelerating fatigue and punishing unacclimatized players.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has already cited a “huge advantage” for Mexico, who live and train at altitude. England forward Marcus Rashford remained pragmatic. “We’re ready for whatever challenges get thrown at us,” he said. Midfielder Morgan Rogers echoed the sentiment, suggesting an earlier kickoff is fine because “you want to play it.”
