Coinbase now allows US users to transfer existing stock portfolios directly onto its platform, marking a decisive expansion beyond cryptocurrency. The company unveiled the service on Tuesday for Coinbase Advanced, its active trader suite.
The update utilizes the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS), which enables securities and cash to move between brokerages without liquidation.

This move positions the firm to compete directly with Robinhood and traditional brokerages by unifying stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies under a single account. The platform is offering zero-commission trading, fractional shares, and up to 3.5% rewards on USDC balances.
The diversification strategy arrives as the company seeks stability beyond volatile crypto trading revenues. Coinbase recently posted a surprise first-quarter loss following weaker digital asset prices, highlighting a critical need to reduce dependency on spot crypto cycles.

Additional features, including crypto and stock options and thematic index perpetual futures, are scheduled to roll out in the coming months.
