Kraken, a prominent US-based cryptocurrency exchange with over 13 million users, has addressed two insider-related incidents. The exchange confirmed that while limited data access occurred, affecting around 2,000 accounts, its systems were not breached and no customer funds were compromised.
Chief Security Officer Nick Percoco stated that the incidents involved unauthorized access to client support systems. In February 2025, Kraken identified a support team member after a video surfaced on a criminal forum. Following immediate access revocation and investigation, further similar activity led to the identification and termination of a second support team member's access.
Kraken reported that potentially viewed data was limited to client support information, impacting roughly 0.02% of its user base. The exchange has stated it will not meet the extortion demands from a criminal group threatening to release materials. Kraken is collaborating with industry partners and federal law enforcement in multiple jurisdictions to investigate broader insider recruitment efforts targeting various tech sectors.
The exchange believes sufficient intelligence has been gathered to identify those responsible, with further details withheld due to an ongoing investigation.
