Tether, the leading stablecoin issuer, has announced the cessation of its offshore Chinese Yuan-pegged stablecoin, CNH₮. The decision stems from significantly lower demand compared to its other stablecoin products and increased regulatory pressures.
Tether will immediately cease minting new CNH₮ tokens. Holders will have one year from the announcement date to redeem their existing tokens, with a further reminder to be issued before the deadline.
The company cited "community interest and adoption" as central to its product decisions, noting that CNH₮ failed to gain substantial traction. This lack of engagement made it challenging to justify the operational, engineering, and compliance resources required for its maintenance.
Evolving market conditions also contributed to the token's reduced long-term viability. Tether stated its priority is to allocate resources to enhance security, reliability, and innovation across the digital asset landscape.
Consequently, Tether will sharpen its focus on its flagship stablecoin, USDT. This move aims to improve liquidity, expand tokenization infrastructure, and support new financial tools for global users and developers.
