A major Unison study indicates at least 21,000 NHS roles across England are set to be cut by 2028. This follows a combined deficit of over 1.1 billion GBP reported by NHS providers in 2025, exacerbating existing job losses.
"Cutting thousands of NHS jobs is the wrong answer when staff are already stretched to breaking point," stated Helga Pile, head of health at Unison London. The union reports planned cuts to at least 3,600 clinical roles, alongside support staff reductions through vacancy freezes and restructuring. Several trusts, including University Hospitals Sussex, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, and Frimley Health, are planning significant job cuts.
This comes amid escalating financial pressures. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust reported a deficit exceeding 47 million GBP for 2024/25, while Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust faced a shortfall of nearly 39 million GBP. Unison is urging the government to reassess financial rules impacting staffing and services, advocating for support to expand workforces rather than reduce them.
