Common medications found in your medicine cabinet could raise your risk of dementia. While drugs like statins may protect the brain, others have been linked to cognitive decline.
Antihistamines
Anticholinergic drugs, such as Benadryl and Unisom, block acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter crucial for memory. Long-term daily use has been associated with a roughly 50% increase in dementia risk. Experts recommend newer antihistamines like Claritin or Zyrtec as safer alternatives.
Antipsychotics
These drugs have been linked to an elevated risk of dementia and cognitive impairment. For those with schizophrenia, the immediate need for treatment outweighs long-term risks, but doctors are reducing their use for managing behavior in dementia patients.
Benzodiazepines
Commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep issues, benzodiazepines have been tied to dementia. However, recent research suggests the underlying conditions-not the drugs-may be responsible. One study found no link among patients prescribed them for back pain.
Proton Pump Inhibitors
Used for acid reflux, PPIs like Prilosec have shown conflicting evidence. Some studies suggest a link to dementia, possibly due to vitamin B12 deficiency. Others found no increased risk over three years.
