New research from Sweden suggests that passive sedentary behavior, such as watching TV, may increase dementia risk compared to mentally stimulating activities like office work. Data from 20,811 adults over 19 years shows that each extra hour of passive sedentary time could elevate dementia risk. However, engaging in mental tasks during sedentary periods was linked to reduced risk.
The study’s key findings point towards the importance of mental engagement in preventing dementia, especially for those in midlife. This highlights the need for behavioral changes in daily routines to promote cognitive health.
