The Canadian government will require travelers from Ebola-affected regions to self-isolate for 21 days starting Wednesday.
Immigration authorities are temporarily suspending applications from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda.
The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday the fast-moving outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda is outpacing response efforts, with 220 suspected deaths. A delay in detecting cases means responders are 'playing catch-up' and the epidemic is expected to worsen. Containment is complicated by insecurity in Congo’s Ituri and North Kivu provinces, and there are no approved vaccines for the Bundibugyo virus.
