A new retrospective study provides reassurance that GLP-1 receptor agonists, a popular class of diabetes drugs, do not significantly affect esophageal function in patients with type 2 diabetes. The findings suggest patients can continue these medications during esophageal testing without skewing results.

Researchers analyzed 132 patients who underwent high-resolution manometry between December 2022 and October 2024. Among those on GLP-1 drugs, 64.3% had normal test results. No significant difference in motility diagnoses or reflux rates was found between users and nonusers. Semaglutide was the most common agent, representing 57.1% of cases. Most users were female (69.0%), and both groups had identical median HbA1c levels at 6.6%.

The study authors conclude that GLP-1 use does not alter esophageal motility patterns or reflux outcomes, allowing clinicians to proceed with testing without requiring patients to pause therapy.
