An unprecedented outbreak of hantavirus has struck the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius off the coast of West Africa, sparking global concern. Eight cases have been reported, including three deaths. The Dutch-flagged vessel, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, is now en route to the Canary Islands with 147 passengers and crew aboard, all currently asymptomatic and confined to cabins.
The virus identified is the Andes virus, a rare hantavirus capable of person-to-person transmission through close, prolonged contact. Health officials, including the WHO and CDC, emphasize the risk to the general public is extremely low. The incubation period ranges from 7 to 42 days, and there are no vaccines or targeted treatments.
Authorities are tracking 30 passengers who disembarked before the outbreak was detected, on the remote island of St. Helena on April 24. The WHO is developing a plan for safe disembarkation in the Canary Islands.
