A recall has been issued for Kendamil infant formula sold online and at Costco in Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is concerned about the presence of cereulide toxin in the "with whole milk" variety of the one-kilogram containers. This toxin can cause rapid onset food poisoning and is not destroyed by heat.
The recall was prompted by a similar action in another country, although no illnesses have been reported in Canada to date. Nestlé and Danone have also recently recalled products for the same toxin.
European-based Kendal Nutricare stated that a temporary disruption in their usual oil supply led them to use an alternative source for arachidonic acid, a component of Omega 6, in two specific batches produced in May 2025. These batches, identified by codes 897274 and 888632, are the focus of the recall.
While the company asserts these batches meet European safety guidelines for cereulide, Health Canada has a different standard, leading to this precautionary withdrawal. Kendamil emphasizes that this action is a precaution, irrespective of lab results indicating compliance with strict safety limits.
